The National Draughts Team of Guyana secured their second consecutive International wins within two weeks. One week ago they won against Taylors’ Draughts Club in Trinidad and last weekend they defeated Jo-Fe-Wa Organisation from Suriname. President of the National Draughts Association Mr. Jiaram and tournament organizer of the Jo-Fe-Wa Dam Bond in Suriname, Mr. Hemradj Basdewsingh organized the second invitational Goodwill game between the two countries here in Guyana. The tournament involved senior players and school children from both countries.
The game was opened at the Aquatic Centre Lilliendaal where Jiaram welcomed the participants. The Guyana senior players were comprised of Jiaram, Khemraj Pooranmall, Mark Brathwaite, Ulric Brathwaite and Steve Bacchus. Ulric was defeated by P. Hardyal of Suriname, Pooranmall won against H. Basdewsingh, Bacchus took a win from P. Basdewsingh, Mark drew with P. Hardyal and Jiaram lost to H. Basdewsingh. The result reads Guyana 5 points Suriname 5 points. A tie breaker at this point was inevitable.
Jiaram choose the most informed player, Khemraj Pooranmall, from Guyana, while P. Hardyal who is the Draughts teacher in Suriname was chosen to compete in the tie breaker. A half hour on the clock was allotted for each player. Both players battled intensively to the end but the result ended in a draw. The second breaker was adjourned to be played at the Kanuku Lodge Campbelville the following evening. Again Jiaram laid his trust in Pooranmall to continue the battle. The game started at 7.10pm on another half hour each on the clock. Again both players battled, while anxious spectators from both countries looking for a breakthrough from their counterparts but the game ended in yet another draw.
A ten minute each was the next breaker but Pooranmall was reluctant to take up that challenge since being a studious player found that ten minutes would be too short. However, coaxing from his captain Mr. Jiaram encouraged him to take up the challenge. The game resumed again with both players trying to beat the clock. Evenly poised, both players battled with even pieces. Brain versus brain, mind versus mind, it was late in the evening. Three minutes to go on the clock and Pooranmall stepped up the heat. He mentally tortured the Surinamese. He sneaked through his opponent’s defence and took up the King Check. Two moves after it was all over; Guyana won. At a simple presentation ceremony both Jiaram and Basdewsingh complimented Pooranmall for his fine performance; he was adjudged best player of the tournament.
In the children tournament, the Guyanese children were outmatched by the children of Suriname. The only win from Guyana came from Devendra Budhu of Campbelville Secondary School. Those involved were: – Campbelville Secondary – Orlando Braithwaite, Devendra Budhu, Rayon Pollydore, Tyrese Lam and Jia Jun Zhu accompanied by games master, Mr. Gaskin. From St. John’s Secondary – Marlon Bruce, Joshua Sobers and Demetre Van Sluytman accompanied games master, Mr. Downer.
The National Draughts Association would like to thank the NSC for the usage of the Aquatic Centre venue, Guyana Beverage Inc. for refreshment, H. A. Snacks and Mr. Marcel Hutson CEO Ministry Of Education.
