Although the entire second day was washed out, the second round Hand-in-Hand Inter-County U-19 three-day match at Lusignan ended in one and a half days as Berbice defeated defending Champions Demerara by eight wickets in the low scoring match-up with over a session and half remaining yesterday.
Scores: Demerara (148 & 50), Berbice (120 & 79-2).
The emphatic win, led by a mesmerising spell of 7-16 by Man-of-the-Match left-arm spinner Kelvin Umroa and 2-20 from off-spinner Karan Arjpaul, pushed Berbice one step closer to dethroning Demerara as all they need to do in their final match from today is take first innings points against the National U-17s.
Play began at 09:30hrs in overcast conditions and Berbice on 102-5 replying to Demerara’s 148, and it took the defending champions just under an hour to claim the remaining five wickets for the addition of just 18 runs.
Once Kevlon Anderson was taken at leg-slip from one that bounced and turned from Off-spinner Dwain Dick after adding just six runs to his overnight 16, nobody else reached double figures.
Windies U-19 World Cup left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd (5-54) and Dick (4-26) to followed up his six-wicket haul in the first round, bowled in tandem to befuddle the batsmen to spin Demerara to first innings points.
When Demerara began their second innings with a slim lead of 28 they quickly slumped to 18-4 after opener Adrian Hinds (1) was bowled by Umroa as the inept batting display on both sides had little to do with the state of the pitch as indisciplined batting orchestrated their own demise.
Windies World Cup U-19 player Bhaskar Yadram got off the mark with a six off Anderson but failed to show the temperament required by a batsman who had played First-Cricket.
When he was ninth out, off the bowling of Arjpaul his team was in danger of not reaching 50 as Umroa was virtually unplayable on a track with assistance for the spinners.
Berbice needing 79 for to win in two sessions, had a solid start before both openers fell in the space of six runs with them seven runs away from consecutive victories.
Algoo, one of only two batsmen with centuries in this year’s tournament, clobbered four sixes in his explosive 38 before he threw his wicket away looking to go after Sagar Hertheramani with the score on 66-1.
Junior Sinclair followed up first his first innings 58 with another good innings of 31 before he too threw his wicket away when he was bowled by Nedd.
Javid Karim (1) and Kevin Sinclair (8) saw their team to victory at 13:26hrs with the sun reappearing in all its glory.
