This series of workshops being conducted by the Ministry of Social Protection through the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute is a developed initiative to evoke the latent leadership abilities or skills that women have across Guyana to create an enabling environment in which all women in Guyana can thrive and uncover their true potential.
The workshops are part of strides to achieve the sustainable development goal which speaks to Gender Equality.
The Ministry of Social Protection has the mandate to mainstream gender towards achieving gender equality in Guyana.
The mandate underpins the comprehensive provisions for action addressing the concerns for mainly the development of women.
In order for the Ministry to achieve this goal, a Gender and Social Inclusion policy is needed.
The policy is in its final stage of formulation. However, in spite of the existence of the policy instrument and institutional frameworks, programmes on gender mainstreaming will not be effective without capacity-building.
As such, training sessions are scheduled to be held to help the citizenry understand the concepts on gender mainstreaming.
This week, the Ministry through the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute held a workshop under the theme “Enhancing Capabilities and Increasing Choices.”
The workshop was held at the Region Five Democratic Council Boardroom. Its sole focus was to enable and encourage women to be active and involved in the decision making process now that the Local Government Elections (LGE) is insight.
Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally, said that she wanted to see women in a more prominent role and voicing the opinions of Region Five for the holistic development of the country of Guyana.
“Women must get involved in production and manufacturing even if you have to turn soil and clean the gutters with men too.” Genders must be equal in policy development and decision-making process for the nation to grow.
Minister Ally said that the women must stop the thinking that their entire duty lies only in the kitchen and the house and the men too must stop limiting women to it.
Jennifer Wade, who spoke on behalf of the Regional Executive Officer Ovid Morrison, encouraged the women to see the workshop as an addition to their empowerment.
