As the East Demerara Football Association leg of the GFF/NAMILCO Thunderbolt Flour Power National Under-17 Intra Association League winds down, Mahaica Determinators defeated Golden Stars by the lone goal of their encounter, while BV Triumph United (BVTU) and Buxton Stars battled to a 1-1 draw yesterday at the Golden Grove Ground, East Coast Demerara.
The league in its second and final round which kicked off since last year but was put on hold due to a number of mitigating factors including the inclement weather which rendered the #1 playing venue; Golden Grove Ground, unplayable for a number of months.
Yesterday’s main event produced some exciting exchanges between two of the top young sides in the EBFA. Both teams displayed good awareness and positioning as well as ball control but it was the BVTU which drew first blood when Shamar Johnson found the back of the nets on the stroke of half time.
It was not easy for either side to penetrate each other in the final third but BV finally broke that deadlock. Even as they enjoyed the advantage, score wise, Buxton Stars never let up as they pressured BVTU whenever they got the opportunity.
On 65 minutes, the young stars made good on an opportunity to level things up, Colin Willis burying his shot in the back of the nets. No other goals materialised and both teams walked away with an equal share of the spoils.
The first match of the afternoon saw Mahaica Determinators, beating Golden Stars by the lone goal of that encounter which was scored as early as the 2nd minute, thanks to Julius Hamilton. Hamilton’s strike also sealed the second place for the Mahaica team as they managed 32 points behind champions, Buxton United which ended on 37.
Thereafter, both teams tried their utmost to find the nets, but that was not to be as they held off each other very well in the attacking third with stout defending. What makes the Mahaica win even sweeter is the fact that they played with one man short for the entire 90 minutes.
