Round-robin action in the National Club Basketball Championships dubbed ‘Road to Mecca V’ and hosted by the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) continued on Wednesday night last at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) with three matches. Following are the details of those matches.
Bounty Colts 75-58 Plaisance Guardians
Two-time defending Champions, Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA) Bounty Colts maintained their perfect record with a third win in Group A, handing their affiliate Plaisance Guardians their second loss, 75-58.
Top scoring for Colts in the 17-point win were Shane Webster and Timothy Thompson with 16 points each while teammate Stanton Rose chipped in with 14.
Kobras 65-56 Republic Bank Nets
Travis Burnett, who is now beginning to find his momentum in the tournament, sunk a game-high 18 points to guide Kobras, which finished last year’s Road to Mecca IV in third place to a comfortable 11-point victory over Republic Bank Nets.
Carlos Edwards (10 points) and Mark Richards (8) combined to guide Kobras past the line. Mortimer Williams netted 15 points for Nets in a losing effort.
Pacesetters 76-69 Eagles
Mark Richards’ game high 23-points couldn’t prevent Eagles Basketball Club from losing their second game on the trot after winning their opening match against Kobras. Pacesetters followed up their win against Plaisance Guardians with another composed victory and was led by Jaleel Duke (17 points) and Tariq Cave (12) to their second win in as many matches in Group B.
The competition continues this afternoon from 18:00hrs with three more matches. In the first match, Eagles will bounce with Amelia Ward Jets, followed by Canje Nights against Retrieve Raiders 20:00hrs. The main event will see Mecca IV runners-up Victory Valley Royals coming up against Pacesetters from 22:00hrs.
The Champions of this tournament will be decided on April 28th and they will cash in on $600,000, the second place finishers $400,000 and 3rd $300,000. Meanwhile, the MVP will pocket $200,000, player with the most points, most rebounds and most improved player each receiving $100,000 each.
