Led by a six-wicket haul from off-spinner Dwayne Dick, Demerara registered an innings and 56 run victory over the Select Under-17 Team when the first round of the Guyana Cricket Board Hand-in-Hand Inter County U19 three-day tournament concluded yesterday.
Trailing by 309, The Select U17 Team resumed on their overnight 11-1 at the Everest Cricket Club and showed determination as they took the fight to their more senior counterparts with Yudistir Persaud crafting an unbeaten 90 despite Dick’s decisive bowling performance.
Dick bowled opener Navindra Persaud (07) with one that turned back sharply from outside off-stump before he had the stubborn Andrew Samaroo caught and bowled for 30 leaving the score at 56-3.
Seon Glasgow came in and showed his intentions early on taking boundaries off Dick but the off-spinner knocked back his off-stump with another sharp turner. Andre Seepersaud and Persaud then added 70 for the fifth-wicket to frustrate their opponents in sweltering heat.
The duo began watchfully and rotated the strike nicely, picking up boundaries off the wayward balls. Seepersaud timed the ball well, but fell to Dick with just two short of what would have been a well deserved half century.
He counted eight fours. Nedd bowled Lance Roberts without scoring before Persaud added 50 for the sixth wicket with Nigel Deodat. Persaud reached his fifty with a couple through covers and continued to accumulate his runs on both sides of the pitch almost untroubled.
Deodat mixed aggression with defense and hit two fours before he was taken off Nedd for 37 before Dick removed Gevon Schultz for three. Persaud continued to play his shots and as he approached his century, Demerara skipper Bhaskar Yadram took the new ball and his decision paid off as pacer Qumar Torrington (1-3) had Niron Bissu caught at first slip for seven.
Nedd then performed the final rights by trapping the injured Sheldon Charles lbw without scoring as the Select U17 were bowled out in the final session for 252. Persaud struck eight fours and one six, faced 146 balls and batted for 196 minutes. Dick finished with 6-110 off 35 overs while Nedd had 3-32 from 18 overs. Yadram was named man-of-the-match for his unbeaten triple century.
Scores: Demerara 489-8 declared (Bhaskar Yadram 301*, Adrian Hinds 94; Niron Bussu 4-69) beat The Select U17 Team 180 all out (Sachin Singh 60, Yudistir Persaud 48; Ashmead Nedd 5-38) and 252 all out (Yudistir Persaud 90*, Andre Seepersaud 48; Dwayne Dick 6-110) by an innings and 56 runs.
