”You are no longer representing your Club alone from today, but you would be representatives of the Ancient County of Berbice – a place that has legendary status in Cricket. I want you to know that no form of indiscipline would be tolerated by Management.
The new trademark for Berbice Cricket shall be discipline and hard work. On behalf of every Berbician, I wish you well and we are all confident that with God’s richest blessings you would be successful”.
This was the charge that the newly elected Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) President, Hilbert Foster gave to the Berbice Under-19 Inter-county Team as they departed for the Guyana Cricket Board 2018 Hand-in-Hand Tournament in Georgetown.
The Berbice Cricket Board President and his Executives including Secretary Rabindranauth Saywack, Vice President Albert Smith, Executive Members Angela Haniff and Neil Rudder met with the team for one hour at the Berbice Cricket Board Office in New Amsterdam.
Foster since his election on the 18th February, 2018, has adopted an on hands approach to meet with stakeholders, cricketers across the ancient county and in a passionate plea to the players, he encouraged them to remember that there is no “i” in the word “team” and that the strength of any team is only as strong as its weakest link.
The Berbice Cricket Board, he stated had invested heavily to make sure that the team was properly prepared and ready by hosting trial matches, practice sessions and even an inspiration session with Berbice Cricket Legend, Joseph Solomon. For the first time in several years, a Berbice Team would go into an Inter-County Tournament with its players ready with club matches readiness. The Players over the last month has been involved in Under-17, 19, 21 and Second Division matches organised by BCB and as such are match ready.
Batsmen Leon Swamy, Garfield Benjamin, Alex Algoo, Steve Deonarine, Kevin Sinclair, Junior Sinclair, Javed Karim and Kevlon Anderson have all shown good form while bowlers Christopher Harry, Kevin Umroa, Karran Arjpaul, Keith Simpson and Kevin Sinclair and Trevlon Stanislaus have all performed well in local tournaments.
Foster urged the players to represent the Berbice logo with pride, passion, commitment and warned them that he has instructed the Team’s Management to be firm about any form of indiscipline.
The Berbice Cricket Board President handed over six trophies to the Manager of the team, Neil Rudder on behalf of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) which would be used to honour the Berbice Man-of-the-Match for each game in the tournament.
RHTY&SC also funded the preparation of the Berbice Under-19 Caps for the team. Foster stated that every Berbice Team would be provided with Inter-County Caps as a souvenir of pride for the players. Foster also disclosed that once successful, the team would be honoured by the Berbice Cricket Board in a meaningful way.
Secretary Rabindranauth Saywack in brief remarks spoke of the importance of following the advice of Management and that the Captain on field should be respected at all times. Manager Neil Rudder stated that the team was determined to make Berbice proud and expressed gratitude to the Board for getting the team fully prepared for the tournament.
The entire team under the leadership of Kevin Sinclair committed themselves to work as a Unit and to return home with both the One-day and Three-Days titles.
