An eyewitness and an ex-police rank have reportedly helped police to identity the gang that killed Dominican Republic national, Pedro Pablo Rosario, and carted off a sum of raw gold from a Cuyuni/Mazaruni mining camp, two Fridays ago.
Kaieteur News understands that some of the suspects, including an individual known as ‘Fat Man,’ are already in custody.
Sources close to the case indicated that the suspects are individuals who reside in the Cuyuni/Mazaruni area known as Blackwater Backdam, where the camp that was attacked is located.
More suspects were brought to Georgetown yesterday. The Force’s Major Crimes Unit is reportedly spearheading the investigation.
Police had also detained the mining camp workers after having some suspicion about their version of events.
From what investigators are now being told, the gunmen shot Rosario because he was armed with the company’s shotgun when the men attacked.
Rosario’s body bore shotgun injuries and injuries that were inflicted by a handgun.
A source had said that a shotgun is missing from the camp, and that workers had claimed that it fell overboard while they were pursuing the attackers.
According to reports, the gunmen entered the camp at around 02:00hrs last week Friday.
After shooting Rosario, the robbers allegedly held the other employees at gunpoint before fleeing with two mats from the operation’s sluice box.
One worker who panicked at the sound of the gunshots ran into a crusher and shattered some ribs.
The police believe that they can close the case before weekend.
