– missing shotgun that ‘fell into creek’ may hold clues to killing
Police have detained five employees from the Cuyuni/Mazaruni mining camp from which gunmen allegedly carted off some $30M in raw gold before killing Dominican national Pedro Pablo Rosario.
A senior police official said that ranks from the Force’s Major Crimes Unit have joined the investigation and will question the employees after they are brought to Georgetown today.
Kaieteur News understands that some of the statements that the miners have given have fuelled suspicion that the killing was ‘an inside job’.
A source said that the post mortem has also caused investigators to place the workmen under further scrutiny.
Kaieteur News understands that the examination revealed that Rosario was shot with a handgun as well as a shotgun.
A source said that a shotgun is missing from the camp which allegedly came under attack. The workers have reportedly told investigators that the shotgun fell overboard while they were pursuing the ‘bandits.’
A police official said that seven other men who were arrested between Saturday and Sunday are still in custody. They have been further detained until Friday.
One of the detained men is a former employee of the camp that the ‘gunmen’ allegedly raided.
Those arrests came after police flew in reinforcements on Saturday from the Tactical Services Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department at Eve Leary.
The source also said that the four other Brazilian miners from the camp were questioned.
Police were said to be somewhat baffled as to why the attackers chose to kill Rosario.
There are no reports indicating that he had done anything to provoke the attackers.
The mining camp is reportedly owned by a Kitty resident.
According to reports, Rosario was relaxing in a hammock at around 02.00 hrs on Friday when the gunmen entered the camp and shot him. They then held the other employees at gunpoint before fleeing with two mats from the operation’s sluice box.
