DEAR EDITOR,
I had no intention of responding to Minette Bacchus’ ramblings about the appropriateness of welcoming the Prime Minister home, but in her recent letter, she has shifted her goalpost and mischaracterized my points.
She states and I quote, “Instead of Guyanese discussing hearing from the Prime Minister his appreciation of the support and outpourings received during his period of illness and recuperation, Jerrick Rutherford apparently believes that there is soundness in making obtuse arguments of the worthiness of a welcome ceremony.”
She is comparing what the Guyanese should be doing to what I am saying.
The word ‘instead’, is used to show alternate actions between the same subjects. Please for the sake of sanity connect those points and make some sense. The incredible lack of coherence between the two facts stated in that sentence is appalling and speaks to the rantings of desperation.
Bacchus further stated, “How this can achieve political capital for coalition parties and government is anyone’s guess.”
As I reminded you previously, this government is not about cheap public relations and political stunts, they believe in doing what is right! I did not create a diversion by emphatically stating that the previous government was corrupt and that this one isn’t. Ms. Bacchus raised the point that this government was accusing the former government of wastage and corruption and that they are doing the same. It was in response to her accusation that caused me to ask her to bring her evidence that the government is corrupt. Saying it louder doesn’t make it truer.
There is a general rule that interpretations are taken and not given.
As a classic case in point, Ms. Bacchus states “It would be remiss to ignore admittance by Rutherford that the Coalition Government is “raid[ing] the treasury,” though not as bad as the previous government, as though being less bad makes it justifiable. His exact words are herein quoted….and having some speeches and flag wavers at the airport to show appreciation for the Prime Minister does not raid the treasury in the way that it was previously done.”
How absurd and laughable! How on earth can that be implied as an admittance on my part that the current government is raiding the Treasury? The desperation here is unquestionable. Let the readers of this letter decide.
I will never be mad enough to say that since the government came to office there is no corruption. I will categorically state that the ministers are not corrupt, nor do they create fertile conditions for corruption.
There is no blind loyalty to the current administration, but I am proud to highlight their respect for the rule of law, transparency, equal treatment of all, moral decency in public affairs, and prudent management of the public purse.
I encourage you to continue your missives Ms. Bacchus. With critics like you, the APNU+AFC government will be in office for a long time.
Yours truly,
Jerrick Rutherford
