‘The more you give the more you receive’, that is the adage former National Cycling Champion Wilbert Benjamin is adopting as he continues his benevolence.
Benjamin, who resides overseas, is a businessman both at home in Guyana and in his adopted country, Canada.
The versatile Benjamin, who still rides, is home on his yearly sojourn and has been in ripping form. If not on his bike on the road, he has been leading the way in his benevolent activities.
The kind hearted Benjamin, who hails from Fyrish/ Courtland area on the Corentyne, operates a sports store, a fitness gym and car wash at his Lot 220 Courtland Village, Corentyne, Berbice property along the Corentyne highway.
He has within the last month given substantial donations to a number of upcoming cyclists from his area. Romello Crawford received a Fuji Carbon Fibre Road Bike and spear wheels, Curtis Dey a bike and Shenika Texeira two wheels and now David Hicks. His home club the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) received a new set of uniforms.
Hicks received a brand new racing bike. The 14 year Old Rose Hall Town resident attends the Chandisingh Secondary School. He was the juvenile champion for last year and has been in top form so far this year. He rides for Team United in Georgetown and also team Rigtech Sonic in Trinidad and Tobago.
Hicks who is the younger brother of talented cyclist, Andrew Hicks, also represented Guyana in Barbados last year at the Caribbean junior Championships.
The simple presentation ceremony was held at the Benjamin Sports store. Benjamin speaking to the media stated, he has seen Hicks ride and noted his enormous talent and tremendous potential. However, the bike he is using is not up to standard and basically is falling apart.
He reasoned that equipment is important for you to succeed and decided that on behalf of the Benjamin Sports Store to give Hicks a new bike so that he could realize his potential.
Hicks expressed heartfelt thanks to Benjamin for donating the bike to him and for what he is doing in the community. He stated that he will try his best to make full use of the bike and win as many races as possible. (Samuel Whyte)
