Two months after Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman fined a handyman for stealing two zinc sheets from the Guyana Public Union Sports Complex building, he was yesterday back before the said Magistrate to answer to a similar charge.
Andrew Arjune, 30, pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on April 5 at Kitty Seawall, Georgetown, he stole one 2-inch Honda water pump valued $200,000, property of Deonauth Lalta.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore stated that on the day in question, Police officers were on patrol duty in the Kitty area when they saw Arjune walking south along Vlissengen road with a water pump on his shoulder.
As a result the officers questioned him and he was unable to tell them where he got the water pump from.
Further investigation was carried out and it was discovered that the article was stolen from a contractor who was working at the Kitty Seawall.
The prosecutor told the court that the stolen article was positively identified by Lalta.
Arjune, when given a chance to address the court, stated “I just begging you to help me out.”
Magistrate Latchman after listening to Arjune, told the court that given the fact that he was recently warned by the court, and the need to prohibit others from contemplating similar offences, she was sentencing him to 18 months imprisonment.
Arjune appeared before Magistrate Latchman two months ago and pleaded guilty to a charge which stated that on February 28 at Thomas Lands, he stole two zinc sheets valued $10,000 from the Guyana Public Union Sports Complex building.
Arjune had told the court that he found the zinc sheets on the ground and he decided to remove them. The Magistrate after listening to him, imposed a fine of $30,000 or if he defaulted, two weeks imprisonment.
