Forty-six year-old truck driver Chetram Moonsammy, who is charged with 12 counts of causing death by dangerous driving, stood in the Berbice High Court yesterday before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a mixed jury, as the trial into the matter got underway.
It is alleged that on Friday, October 29, 2010, Moonsammy drove motor lorry GLL 8863 in a manner dangerous to the public, thus colliding with a minibus BHH 1842 and claiming the lives of the 12 persons.
The offence was committed on the Number 19, East Coast Berbice Public Road.
Those killed were Ouditnarine Babulall, Selima Razack, Orlando De Mattos, Salima Juman, Marquest Ault, Talita Mendonca, Joseph Khan; Cindy Jaggernauth, Janet Baker, Patricia Asgarally, Nazimudin Mohinudin and Chetram Ramphal.
Attorney at Law Tuanna Hardy is representing the State while attorney Mursaline Bacchus is appearing for Moonsammy.
Before the matter began, attorney Bacchus raised some preliminary objections to the judge about the trial. Justice Brassington then asked the defence counsel to submit his points in writing.
The matter is continuing.
