Paul Archer, 47, was yesterday remanded by Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was initially charged for fraudulent conversion, and was later charged for escaping from Police custody.
The father of eight, resides at 562 Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, and is a horse cart driver. It was alleged that on October 14, last, Lilowtie Persaud entrusted Archer to sell one Honda generator valued $30,000. He was said to have converted the money given to him for the generator to his own use.
The matter was dismissed after Persaud told the court that she no longer wished to proceed with the charges against Archer. However, on April 5, 2018 at the Kitty Police station, Archer escaped after being charged for fraudulent conversion.
Yesterday, he told the court, “I left because I was worried about what my kids would eat and who would look at them. I have eight kids; my eldest is 13 and the smallest is four. Please feel sorry for me,” Archer told Magistrate Daly.
When made aware of being jailed due to his guilty plea on the escape charge he changed the plea to not guilty.
Richard Harris, Police Prosecutor opposed bail being granted to the defendant since he is a flight risk. On the day of escaping, he was not found at the address given and had to be recaptured on the road by police ranks.
Archer was later remanded and will appear in court again on April 27, 2018.
