In brilliant sunshine on a ground surrounded by houses with spectators in them watching what turned out to be a riveting contest in Mahaica, Buxton snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a thrilling three-run win against home team Strathaven last Sunday.
Reduced to 35 overs contest due to overnight rain and a moist pitch, Buxton opted to bat and got a steady 46-run start from their openers, but it all went downhill from there.
Opener Marvin Cato made (45) but only tail-enders, Kwesi Douglas (19) and Andrea McFarlane (20) made any score of significance as the visitors fell for 156 in 34.3 overs. R. Arjune (3-21), S. Persaud (2-9), G. Hemraj (1-32) and three run outs undermined the Buxtonians.
The hosts in reply fell for 153 with nine balls left in the exciting game which went down to the wire as disciplined bowling from Andrea McFarlane (3-25), Rawle Merrell (2-25) and Clive Andries who represented Guyana in both cricket and Football, had 1-26.
When Strathaven slumped to 45-5 from 14 overs, Buxton must have thought they had the match signed, sealed & delivered.
However, Z. Salim (48) & D. Hemraj (36) orchestrated one of the better recuperation efforts in a low scoring contest on a tricky surface.
With tension mounting, thoughts of the game slipping away was present on the glum faces of the Buxtonians before another unexpected twist occurred when the breakthrough came through McFarlane with the score on 143.
What followed was a sea saw battle and Buxton sensed the opportunity and pounced like a Starved cat, clawing their way back into the contest.
Suddenly, from 143-6 it became 150-9 with three needed to win from 12 balls.
Members of the Community were now out in their numbers, taking whatever vantage point that was present to see the end of this spectacle and screams of victory was heard coming from the nearby homes for the hosts.
However, the party spoiler was David Glenn who had 2-25 after taking the last wicket with a brilliant yorker and the shocked onlookers couldn’t believe what they had seen.
