Old Fort men continued their fine form and winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Bounty GCC as the Bounty Paper Towels second division league continued on Sunday at the St. Stanislaus College ground on CARIFESTA Avenue. On the distaff side, favourites Pizza Hut GCC maintained their unbeaten form in the ladies competition with a 6-2 victory over the Bingo Spartans.
Bounty GCC men seemed destined for victory as their match against Old Fort got off to a cracking start with a bullet of a shot from Shaquille Leung scoring in the 6th minute. A penalty stroke conversion eight minutes later by Meshach Sargeant saw the Bourda boys head into the halftime break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Old Fort national Striker Jael Gaskin then came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and evened the score within 15 minutes through a pair of goals of his own. With the match deadlocked at 2-2, the brilliance of Old Fort midfielder Omar Hopkinson was once again the deciding factor for his team. Hopkinson produced a skilful individual run to finish with a goal four minutes from full time that secured the 3-2 victory for Old Fort who now sit at the top of the men’s pool.
The Sequel were forced to work in the early stages of their match against the feisty Saints U19s. With the Sequel goalkeeper still gearing up on the side-line, crafty Saints midfield
er Edmund Chinian snuck in a goal in the opening minute to surprise last year’s winners. The Sequel recaptured control of the game soon after and emerged 3-1 winners with goals from Alan and Philip Fernandes along with Damon Woodroffe.
In the female division, Pizza Hut GCC were all smiles as they faced the Bingo Spartans in their ladies clash. With Pizza Hut taking the lead in the 10th minute through Vanessa Pires, they never seemed threatened. Young striker Sarah Klautky extended her team’s lead by one with a breakaway goal in the 13th minute, while team captain Carina Moller slammed home a quartet of goals to take Pizza Hut’s total to six. Makeda Harding managed a field goal in the 27th minute and Dominique DeGroot converted a penalty stroke ten minutes later to add consolation for Spartans, finish with the final score 6-2.The Old Fort Shooting Stars and Woodpecker Hikers played to a nil-all draw despite several chances by both sides.
Matches continue this Saturday and Sunday at the St Stanislaus College ground from 15:00 hrs.
