Although the lights were far from ideal the atmosphere at the DCC ground was absolutely fantastic when the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) held the final of the Third Annual Guyana Diabetics Association (GDA) Under-17 T20 Cricket tournament last Saturday night, World Health Day.
In windy conditions with a slight drizzle in the air, DCC won the toss and led by a 37-ball 62 decorated with eight fours and three sixes from Man-of-the-Match Thameshwar Permaul, 40 with two fours and two sixes from Brandon Jaikarran, an unbeaten 41 (4×4 1×6) from Skipper Sachin Singh and Garrick Persaud’s 20 (3×6), reached 188-3 in 20 overs.
Transport Sports Club (TSC) set the daunting task of scoring at 9.4 runs per over to win on a very good track and fast outfield, a team without a usable ground for over a decade, were restricted to 104-7 when their overs expired as only opener Shivanand Goosain (20) passed 15.
Jaafar Pender (2-14) and Ezekiel Wilson (2-19) bowled DCC to an emphatic 84-run win.
With a large and vocal crowd including former National cricketers Nolan McKenzie, Linden Fraser, the Harper brothers and Windies selector Travis Dowlin and pulsating music, fans were not short of entertainment beyond the boundary.
Permaul, who hit Goosain and left-arm pacer Daniel Goolab for sixes along with Jaikarran, who matched him shot for shot, added 92 for the first wicket before Jaikarran fell to Jonathon Adams.
Permaul and Singh put together 42 for the second wicket as Permaul reached his second fifty of the competition before he was bowled by Kishore Seepersaud.
Singh’s highest score in this tournament was 96 against Saints when DCC made their highest total of 212; along with Persaud the pair added another 50 for the third wicket. Persaud smashed Goosain for consecutive sixes before Singh stroked the last ball for four in an over which cost 19 runs while Persaud hammered Jonathon Adams for four before Singh dumped him for a four and a six in an over which produced 22.
Persaud deposited Joshua Blackman for six in the last over but was bowled next ball as DCC, which won the GCA’s U-15 title on Friday, pounded 66 runs from the last five overs. TSC began their reply in positive fashion taking 11 from the first over bowled by Jason Holder with openers; Goosain and Rudranauth Kissoon each hitting a boundary.
Kissoon (12) departed at 30-1 while Daveanand Khemraj (8) flicked Holder for four before he was bowled by Wilson at 48-2. Goosain was dismissed by Daniel Mootoo at 50-3. At the half way stage TSC were 56-3 in comparison to DCC’s 77-1. Kishore Seepersaud (14) drilled Wilson for a flat six but was bowled next ball.
Guyana U-15 player Shemar Yearwood drove Mootoo down the ground for four but when he was removed by Indergit Nanan for 15 at 81-5, it triggered a lower order slump as Pinder sent back Blackwood and Goolab for ducks, three wickets falling in the 80s.
Adams (11*) ensured TSC were not bowled out as Nanan and Pinder bowling in tandem kept the batsmen in shackles. TSC received $30,000 and the runners-up trophy while DCC added $50,000 to their coffers in addition to the Championship trophy while Singh took the Lion’s share of the batting awards.
GDA President Glynis Alonzo-Beaton said she was pleased with the atmosphere created by the lights and by the large crowd which turned out, especially parents. Alonzo-Beaton also congratulated both teams for reaching the final. The association will have next year’s final played under lights again.
