The National Sports Commission, Ministry of Presidency Department of Social Cohesion Easter Swimming programme concluded yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre (NAC), Liliendaal.
The programme, which lasted for eight days, consisted of 104 male and female participants between 6-16 years old who were tutored in breathing while swimming, gliding, kicking, threading, streaming, position and free style.
President of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Ivan Persaud encouraged the students to put into practice what they were taught so they can continue to improve. He added that there is a need for young swimmers and made mention of young Leon Seaton who represented Guyana at the recently concluded Carifta Games in Jamaica.
Supervisor of the National Aquatic Centre, Wilton Spencer said he was pleased with the programme and all the participants showed signs of improvement to the extent that they were selected to give demonstrations. He thanked the coaches and staff for a job well done.
Coach Denroy Trotman, in a invited comment, indicated that he saw a lots of improvement during the programme and advised parents to encourage their children to get involved in clubs because its does not stop here. He said that the exposure was good but there is a still a lot of work that needs to be done.
Trotman stated that plans are in place to extend the programme throughout Guyana and there is enough expertise to do so.
Renee Whittaker, one of the best graduating students, said the programme went well. She informed that even though she was scared at first, she felt better as it continued. Whittaker said that she is looking forward to improve her strengths and weaknesses in the sport and hopefully represent Guyana in the near future.
Whittaker, who attended Success Elementary School on the East Bank of Demerara, said she developed an early passion of the sport and is happy for this opportunity.
