Yesterday saw the conclusion of the Biennial National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEAM) Fair, which commenced on Wednesday.
It was held under the theme, “Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics paving the way for a green and sustainable society”.
Chief Judge, Mr. Phillip Da Silva, elaborated upon the theme and what was expected from the students. He explained the criteria for the judging and how the projects reflected the theme.
Each display needed a booklet explaining the exhibit and the physical display of the project. Then there were the oral presentations, which tested the students’ ability to explain their exhibits and test their communication skills.
During his remarks, Mr. Da Silva stated that the fair was an opportunity for students to highlight an issue in the economy and formulate a plan that will help to combat the issue as well as develop new ideas.
This year, Region Ten, Linden, went home with most of the trophies being distributed among four participating schools. Mackenzie High placed second in Lower Secondary Science category with their project, Purple Square. In the Social Biology Science category, the same school got first place with their project, ‘Healthy Smealthy’.
There was also a winner from Linden in the Mathematics Category and others in Chemistr
y and Agriculture.
Christiansburg Secondary placed first in the Home Economics category and the Linden Foundation won a few trophies as well.
The students are very proud of their win and stated that they worked really hard and were not planning on going home empty handed.
The programme also saw a dance from the National Dance Company and a spoken word about the prevalent issue of women violence. The presentation was entitled “Useless hands”.
The teachers and the students spent months of planning their projects. They had to compete in the regionals before making it to the nationals.
Students from Cottonfield, St. Joseph’s High, St. Rose’s High, Berbice High, Global Technology, Apex Academy, Mahdia Secondary, St, Agnes Primary, New Market Primary, and Anna Regina Secondary among others also won in various categories.
The chief judge charged the students with the task of not stopping at the point of winning, but to work more on their projects so that they can be industrialized and incorporated into the economy later.
He noted that he was very impressed with the projects and declared all the students as winners, whether they received a trophy or not.
