DEAR EDITOR,
I believe that if the decision in third term case allows for Jagdeo to run again for President, he will do so, but somehow I also feel that he is giving a lot more thought to 2020 than we think.
Better yet, if the ruling prevents him from running, I believe he will surprise us.
You see for me, Jagdeo is a smart fellow, and he knows what it will take for the PPP to win.
Although, he might be the most capable and competent person to run the Government, he knows that you have to win power first, and so I believe his pragmatism will come to the fore regarding his decision as to who will be the candidate. (Did I hear someone say that it is not his decision? Schuuppps!)
He knows that the PPP base to which he is a ‘demigod’ is not enough, and that those votes that went to the AFC in 2015 will not go to them again, but they will not come to the PPP either, since they will become the prime targets for the rigging. He knows too that the important Amerindian vote would be played with the usual political power patrimony, and that the overwhelming sentiments and support in Richmond Hill and those places cannot be translated into votes here.
So what is the position?
Now we all agree that although this APNU/AFC Government is a total failure, it still will not be an easy task to win over African Guyanese support, which Jagdeo himself has deemed necessary. Neither would those who tasted power from 2015, let go easily. He knows that too. So, what will he do? It is the candidate, stupid!
Here is where I believe that Ralph Ramkarran comes in.
Since the 2011 elections results, Ralph has been talking about the need for realistic inclusionary governance, and 2015, if nothing else, showed that the zero sum PPP/PNC outcomes of the past are no longer tenable. Whatever we do, the future will be different. Jagdeo knows too that there is no one who can appeal to African Guyanese more than Ralph. Not even him.
So my feeling is that he will likely be talking with Ralph, and notwithstanding what transpired before, I believe he will disappoint many in the PPP, worse yet, if the CCJ disappoints him. Interesting times are ahead.
Yours faithfully,
Balgobin
