Two more employees have been arrested up to late yesterday afternoon in connection with the murder of the security guard that was on duty at Sukhram General Store and Agro Chemicals (Fat-lady), located along the Rose Hall Town Public Road, Saturday night.
This arrest brings to nine the number of persons in custody. Seven were detained Sunday night.
Police sources have since confirmed that they have received information that there was an attempted break-in at the store five days earlier. Those in custody include a former employee and his parents. The source, who is close to the investigation, also revealed that they are working on the theory that employees would have contracted persons to rob the business. A door was reportedly left open. Two employees were said to be responsible for closing the business in the afternoon.
Divisional Commander Lyndon Alves confirmed that $1.2 M was stolen during the robbery.
Munesh Prem Ayasammy Monien’s battered body was discovered by police slouched on sandbags near the back entrance of the general store Saturday night.
Monien, 53, who was employed as a security guard for only a few months, was found with a gaping wound to his head, a slash to his throat and legs that appeared to be broken.
The guard, who resided with his sister at Clifton Village, Port Mourant, Berbice, some two villages away from his work site, left for work to begin his shift at 17:00 hrs on Saturday, as he normally would every day.
He was the only guard on duty and was at the back entrance of the business. This entrance could only be accessed through the front of the store.
Shanta Seepersaud, who was left in charge of the store since the owners were overseas, said she received a call around 23:00 hrs Saturday night informing her of what had happened. She said she rushed to the scene and upon her entry into the building accompanied by the police, she saw the gruesome image of the guard lying lifeless in a corner with blood splattered on the walls and sand bags.
She refused to give any other information. She was even reluctant to provide the name of the guard when asked. She is one of the nine in custody.
Police are continuing their investigations.
