The GDF (Green) versus Fruta Conquerors top flight match didn’t produce the action that fans expected.
The latest match day of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Elite League which kicked off at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Easter Sunday, produced two nil-all draws.
The first match was contested amongst league leaders Western Tigers and fourth placed, East Coast Demerara based Victoria Kings.
The Ruimveldt based Tigers (20 points) are favourites to finish above defending champions, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC, who are seated in third place on the league table, five points behind the them and second place Fruta Conquerors (19 points).
Fifth placed Victoria Kings’ Aubrey Gibson, the league’s leading goalscorer, would have been disappointed to not add to his tally as neither team found a way past the respective goalkeepers.
In the feature match, GDF tackled Tucville based Fruta Conquerors who needed a win to go one point clear of Western Tigers for the lead and with four match days remaining in the first half of the competition, Conquerors failed to capitalize on the Golden opportunity by settling with a draw of their own.
Conquerors had the bulk of chances against GDF FC but poor conversion rates continue to plague this team which plays with much fluidity.
The two draws on Easter Sunday meant that the league standings remained unchanged and GDF FC’s chance of finishing on top of the standings for the first half of the league which concludes on April 28 is unrealistic.
The next match day is this Friday at the GFC ground which will host a double header from 18:00hrs. Cougars versus Buxton in the first match that will be followed by an all-East Coast clash between Ann’s Grove and Victoria King’s in the feature game that kicks off at 20:00hrs.
Admission to the venue is $500 and women and children are free.
