Former national cyclist Wilbert Benjamin, now a successful businessman both in Guyana and his adopted home in Canada, former continues with his heart of benevolence where he shows love and affection for his fellow countrymen. He continues to assist with donations of bikes, parts, uniforms and other paraphernalia on a regular basis.
His latest donation was made to national junior female champion Shenika Texeira of a pair of albumin racing bicycle wheels which will be used for her spares. The wheels are valued over $30,000 per pair.
Benjamin, who owns the Benjamin Sports Store, Benjamin Fitness Gym and Car wash situated at Lot 220 Courtland Village Corentyne Berbice, stated that he knows where he came from and would like to assist as much as possible. The presentation was done at the sports store.
He has a special place in his heart for his fellow Berbicians and would do his best to allow them to excel. He said that he admired Texeira’s courage and because she is doing well right now on the racing circuit he feels compelled to assist her in her quest for higher heights.
Texeira, who was accompanied by her mother, was overwhelmed in thanking Benjamin for his kind heartedness. She promised to make the best use of the gifts and do her best in her quest for more success.
The 18 years old Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary School Student stated that she aims this year to do well in her examinations and step up in her cycling exploits. “I want to do more than I did before. I want to venture out into the Caribbean circuit and represent Guyana to the best of my ability,” a smiling Texeira stated.
She is encouraging other females to come forward and ride since there are many opportunities. She said that females need encouragement and sponsorship. She is grateful to ‘Uncle Wilbert’ (Benjamin) for all he has done for her and will definitely give it her best shot.
