Unlimited champion Dave Scott and his family pose in front of his boat Jaguar after one of his victories.
Story and photos by Franklin Wilson in Bartica
While Dave Scott aboard the now famous ‘Jaguar’ dominated the F1/Unlimited category for the 7thconsecutive year, equally commanding in his performances was Jose Jardine who won the 15hp, 40hp and 90hp categories as the curtains came down on the 2018 edition of the Bartica Easter Regatta yesterday afternoon at the Golden Beach Circuit.
Also being declared an overall champion was Alec Hopkinson who ruled the roost in the Jet Ski competition in the two-day competition which witnessed a number of exciting races as well as a few spills but no major accidents.
One such accident in the final race of the day which featured the 200hp boys, there was an unfortunate mishap which resulted in one boat colliding with the other. The organiser, Bartica Development Business Association (BDBA) has taken a decision that it would review the race and make a decision on the winner as well as the Overall Winner of this category.
But apart from that incident, Dave Scott who also competed in this category was defeated by Sean Belle aboard Quicksilver and Selwyn Joseph in D Girls Dem Suga. Scott’s chances of also winning this category was smashed when he lost his engine negotiating the final turn to the finish line and sustained some damage to his boat ‘Jaguar’.
Like the Belle’s which had two boats competing under the name Quicksilver, Scott also had two under the Jaguar brand. Yesterday was a busy day for the racers and officials as many of the races which were scheduled for day one were done yesterday.
Patrons and supporters came out in their numbers yesterday to absorb the action and many left satisfied with what was served up by the competitors and organisers. BDBA Chairman, Ramcharran Boodhoo commented that the committee was elated with the response from the patrons towards every event that was held.
He informed that a meeting to review the event would be held and a statement would be made.
