Dear Editor,
One can only wonder why no investigation or Commission of Inquiry is being launched into the unconcealed rush by certain municipal officials from the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown to illegally acquire and convert the use of large tracts of state lands and municipal reserves in our capital at the expense of the citizenry.
Just looking at the Farnum Playfield, a large portion that was snatched from the residents of the area and handed over to a school located in but which should never have been allowed in the residential area of Subryanville, the open space in Bel Air Park which had to be rescued by a lawyer on behalf of the residents and the city reserve in the Lamaha Springs area which has seen two model houses constructed on it, all land deals that were illegal and marked by secrecy and which should trigger an investigation.
If one were to drive along Francois Street in Section ‘K’, Campbellville just off of Sheriff Street, one would see on the southern side a huge chunk of reserve land contiguous to the Lamaha Canal that has also be the subject of some fishy business, with someone doing land clearing and claiming to have recently acquired it from an official of the Council. Another bit of hanky panky there.
Indeed all of the land aback of properties located on Jacaranda and Lama Avenues in Bel Air Park, that runs contiguous to the Lamaha Canal that is under the control of the Guyana Water Inc. was also handed out to the property owners illegally by officials of the Georgetown Municipality some time ago.
Then we have secret transaction of the leasing to a private developer, of a section of prime city land which is located on David Street behind the GuyOil Gas Station in Kitty, Georgetown, where a city abattoir once stood. Several Councillors are claiming that the transaction was done without their knowledge or consent.
Then we also have the city reserve lands adjacent to Mandela Avenue and the list goes on and on. Shouldn’t the relevant agency put a stopping to this?
