Daniel Williams runs personal best to qualify for Boys Under-20 200m finals
South America under-20 long jump champion, Chantoba Bright, added to her and Guyana’s medal haul at the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Youth Games which is being run off in Nassau, Bahamas after finishing with Bronze in the under-20 girls’ triple jump last night. The athlete who won the long jump on the previous day, leaped 12.14m to finish behind Jamaicans Leone Farquharson (12.24m) and Lotavia Brown (12.23m).
Meanwhile, in other long jumps age groups, the Guyanese did not fare so well with Carl Williams finishing 7th in the under-20 boys’ and Princess Browne finishing 6th in the under-17girls.
On the track, Guyana’s sprint sensation, Daniel Williams, who finished second in the 400m final at the IAAF World under-18 championships last year, booked his place in the final of the 200m last night as well.
In the semifinal, Williams ran a personal best time of 21.21 seconds to finish second behind Jamaican Christopher Taylor, a former World Youth Games 400m champion, who sprinted to victory in a scorching 20.65 seconds and ahead of Barbados’ Matthew Clarke who clocked 21.41 seconds. Daniel will certainly be gearing up to put in another personal best performance in the final which will be completed today, to defeat the inform Taylor.
In other results on Day two, South American Youth Games 400m Gold medalist, Deshanna Skeete, narrowly missed qualification for the final of the under-17 girls’ 200m final after finishing with the ninth fastest time of 24.79 seconds despite finishing second in her heat. Meanwhile, Kenisha Phillips time of 24.48 seconds was good enough to carry her into the under-20 girls 200m final after finishing third in her preliminary race.
Guyana’s 3000m under-17 duo of Cordell Charles and Murphy Nash finished 5th and 6th respectively in the final of that event which was won Mitchell Cordis of the Bahamas in a time of 9 minutes 04.65 seconds. Charles finished in 9 minutes 22.86 seconds, while Nash ran a time of 9 minutes 26 seconds for his sixth place finish.
So far, Guyana has six medals, 1Gold and five bronze. Chantoba Bright has two inclusive of the gold, while Murphy Nash, Deshanna Skeete, Kezra Murray and Shaquka Tyrell each has one Bronze medal to their name.
