The National Draughts Association would be sending a two-man team to Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday April 5th to participate in the Pan American Draught trials and Goodwill games. While other players are eager to go, funding remained a major setback for the association. President of the Association Mr. Jiaram and Vice President Mr. Paul D’Anjou met with the Minister and two other senior officials of the Ministry of Social Cohesion in February to seek assistance for air fares for six players but this proved futile.
The two players on tour Jiaram and Khemraj Pooranmall were able to secure their own funding through sponsors. Noble House Seafoods, Lexus Machining and Diamond / Grove NDC were the main sponsors for Jiaram, while P&P Brokers and Nalico / Nafico sponsored Pooranmall. Other smaller contributions came from Rubis Bel Air, Brans Security Service, Ahmad Hydraulics Bagotstown and the National Insurance Scheme. Hand in Hand Insurance donated knapsacks with water bottles and sun glasses.
The two players would also be in competition with several clubs in Trinidad for four days which would add to their experience. The tour is the first invitational Goodwill games between the two countries.
Jiaram is the holder of the current National ‘A’ class title, while Pooranmall whom did not contest competitions last year had that title on several occasions. The President of the local Association is expected to meet with the executives of the Trinidad Draughts Federation to discuss a return match here in Guyana in keeping with Sports in Tourism. Guyana’s last international game was with Nickerie, Suriname where Guyana emerged winners.
