The Municipality of Lethem is set to improve garbage collection with the acquisition of a brand-new garbage disposal truck and a four-wheel, double cab pick-up truck.
Representative of the works committee of the Lethem Municipality, George Henry said the acquisition of the (Mercedes Benz) truck is a dream of the council that has come to fruition after much hard work, determination and focus.
Henry said it was a delightful day for Lethem and quite an achievement that prompted great expectation at what the future may hold for the town.
“We are a new town with an inexperienced council gaining knowledge everyday but this does not negate what we want for our town and by extension our region.”
He noted that the works committee is always brainstorming to ensure that the projects it embarks on are in keeping with the needs of the town and its residents.
“I am proud to inform you with pride in my heart that this truck that you see before you, was purchased solely and completely by the council just from our income,” the works committee representative revealed.
He added that the committee plans to work diligently to ensure similar projects are equally successful.
“Our motto and goal, is to better the lives of the people of Lethem and that’s what we intend to do.”
Regional Chairman, Bryan Allicock, commended the council for what he called “a significant achievement in the area of sanitation that would greatly benefit the municipality.
Meanwhile, Mayor of Lethem, Carlton Beckles, told the gathering that the vehicles will be used to carry out and enhance the functions of the council.
“We are all here to bless the accomplishment of the Lethem Town Council for the successful achievement of these two trucks,” the Lethem Mayor said.
Beckles noted that the pickup was presented to the council by the Ministry of Communities under the Green Generation Guyana (#3G) Sanitation Management Project.
“And you all may not believe it but this garbage truck, the largest in the country, was purchased with monies gathered by the council,” he divulged.
The Mayor emphasized that it was the responsibility of the finance committee to ensure that the funds were spent accountably in procuring the truck.
He stressed that the finance committee will continue to generate revenue and use it to make Lethem the best town in the country.
