John Caesar, 35, a father of two was on Friday pointed out during an identification parade at the Brickdam Police Station as the man who is responsible for the shooting death and robbery of Linden Businessman, Romel Edison Gomes.
According to information reaching this publication, Caesar who was identified as a chef and who is said to be a resident of East Ruimveldt, was one of two men spotted at the home of the dead businessman, acting in a suspicious manner hours before he was found dead.
For the past two weeks, the police have been monitoring the movements of Caesar and they decided to move in on him last Wednesday when he was arrested on Carmichael Street in Georgetown.
This is not the first time that Caesar has found himself involved with the law. He was previously the subject of a police investigation and even sent to prison on remand for the shooting of a man at the City Mall some time back. It was alleged that he was paid to carry out a hit on the man but the victim survived the attack.
The police in their release to the press on Good Friday indicated that John Caesar’s arrest resulted from an intelligence led operation. We learnt that residents from at least three communities cooperated with the police and shared information which resulted in the capture of the suspect. They are however seeking to locate his accomplice.
On March 12, last, Romel Edison Gomes, 32, a Businessman of Wismar, Linden was killed at his home where he also operates a dry good store and wholesale beverages.
His body was found late the afternoon and according to what was reported, he lived there alone with his young son as his wife resided abroad.
The police are working with the information that the death of the man might also not have just been robbery related but due to a misunderstanding over some money owed to someone.
It was observed by a neighbour that the two suspects and the victim were arguing in the shop. A customer went to make a purchase and saw the victim in the shop sitting on the floor. As the victim saw the customer, he stood up and told her to carry his son over to another shop. The customer then heard one of the suspects saying, “Bai you owe me”.
As the customer was informing persons of what was transpiring with the victim, a loud explosion suspected to be a gunshot was heard. Shortly after, the victim’s car, a silver grey Toyota Allion PVV 2057 which was parked at the front of the shop on the driveway, was seen driving away at a fast rate.
The police later found the man’s car intact and suspected that it was just used by the bandits to get away from the scene of the crime.
