In commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of the late Dr Cheddi B. Jagan, the University of Guyana (UG) is hosting an exhibition showcasing his life.
This roving exhibition will move from Georgetown to Berbice, to Linden and then to the Essequibo Coast. Its primary intention is to present an academic perspective of the life and works of Dr Cheddi B. Jagan, late President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
It is therefore the hope that it succeeds in not only publicising the works by and on Dr Jagan but in raising awareness, especially among school children, of the scholarly endeavours of Dr. Jagan who is considered one of the Founding Fathers of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
Dr Jagan has written extensively and has delivered a number of speeches and broadcasts locally, regionally and internationally.
His works embody his personal and political beliefs, his ideology, his thoughts on Independence, poverty, economic and social development, human rights and education among others.
Among his most celebrated works are: The West on Trial which is an autobiographical work; The Forbidden Freedom: the story of British Guiana; The USA in South America; and A New Human Global Order.
He also contributed several articles to the Thunder and The Mirror newspapers and delivered several talks via his regular column ‘Straight Talk’.
The works on display capture some of the numerous articles, speeches and addresses by Dr. Cheddi B. Jagan. It also includes works on Dr Cheddi Jagan. It is not a comprehensive listing as it does not include Dr Jagan’s speeches, tributes and other articles in audiovisual format since these can be acquired at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre and are listed online under the name of that Centre. Some of the works on exhibit were acquired from the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre and Freedom House, while some of them are located at the University of Guyana Library and online.
This exhibition will run until the end of April 2018, and is the forerunner to other exhibitions, which will feature the works of other great leaders of Guyana.
The launched of the photographic and book exhibition was held at the University of Guyana.
The exhibition, which was hosted at the at the Education Lecture Theatre (ELC) saw various books, newspaper articles, photographs and other publication that were composed by Dr Jagan were on displayed.
Dr. Cheddi B. Jagan was born on March 22, 1918 in Port Mourant, a rural village in the country of Berbice. He was a Guyanese politician who was first elected Chief Minister in 1953 and later Premier of British Guiana from 1961 to 1964, prior to independence.
He later served as President of Guyana from 1992-1997. He is widely regarded in Guyana as one of the Founding Fathers of the Nation.
He is the eldest of 11 children born to parents who came from India to British Guiana as Indentured labourers.
At age 15, he attended Queen’s College in the capital city of Georgetown, for the next three years.
He then migrated to the United States in September 1936 and he returned in October 1943.
Jagan co-founded the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) in 1946, and was subsequently elected to the Legislative Council in November 1947 as an Independent candidate from Central Demerara constituency.
On January 1, 1950, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) was founded by a merger of the PAC and the British Guiana Labour Party (BGLP), with Jagan as its leader, and from BGLP leader Forbes Burnham as its Chairman.
He later won the election in 1953. Jagan suffered a heart attack on February 15, 1997 and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital before being flown by U.S. military airport to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., later that day.
He underwent heart surgery there and died in Washington on March 6, 1997, a mere 16 days before his 79th birthday.
