– Wayne Jones (centre) of Mike’s Pharmacy hands over sponsorship to BCB President Hilbert Foster, while the Company CEO Lakhram Singh looks on.
For the first time in several years, Under-15 Cricketers in the Ancient County of Berbice would be able to play against each other at the Inter-Club level. This was made possible as the Berbice Cricket Board on Tuesday last, launched an Under-15 Inter-Club Tournament with sponsorship from Mike’s Pharmacy of Georgetown. The Tournament would bowl off in about three weeks and would be for players born on or after the 1st September, 2003, is expected to be completed in about two months barring the rainy season.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Hilbert Foster stated that on his election on the 18th February, 2018, he committed his Board to organising cricket at every level and less than two months afterwards the Berbice Cricket Board has been able to secure sponsorship at the Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-21, Second Division, Internal Zone and Female level. Major sponsorships for the Intermediate and First Division would be unveiled shortly.
The Under-15 level, Foster noted is long overdue as currently Berbice Players are representing Guyana at the Under-15 level despite not playing for their Clubs at that level. The Under-15 Tournament would also enable the Berbice Cricket Board Selectors to identify players for next year’s Under-15 and Under-17 Inter-County Tournaments. Promising players would also be selected to be a part of the Berbice Cricket Board 2018 Cricket Academy and a county wide Coaching Programme.
The Under-15 Tournament, which is expected to attract over 20 Teams, would serve as a feeder for the Under-17 level and also for the upcoming Inter-Secondary School Tournament. Foster disclosed that among the teams expected to play are Bush Lot, Blairmont, Young Warriors. Young Achievers, Rose Hall Canje, Tucber Park, Albion, Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes, Port Mourant, Kendall’s Union, No. 73 and Tamarind Root. Players the caliber of Zeynul Ramsammy, Jonathan Ramsammy, Isaiah Thorne, Jeremy Sandia, Tomani Caesar, Mahendra Gopilall would be involved in the Tournament.
Foster expressed gratitude to the Management and Staff of Mike’s Pharmacy for their investment into Berbice Cricket and expressed confidence that the relationship would not only be fruitful but would be a long term one. The Berbice Cricket Board he stated would work very hard to develop long term and solid relationships with each of its sponsors as sponsorship is the foundation to having cricket played. He reassured the Company that the Tournament would be well organised and would achieve all of its objectives.
CEO of Mike’s Pharmacy, Mr. Lakhram Singh expressed pleasure at becoming an official sponsor of the Berbice Cricket Board as he is very impressed with its work. He also stated that investing in Cricket at the junior level is very important as it helps to identify promising talents at a young age. Like Foster, he expressed confidence that the relationship would be a long term one and urged the Berbice Cricket Board to maintain the high bar it has set itself. Singh, also disclosed that outstanding players in the tournament would receive cricket gears (batting gloves and pads), while members of the two finalists would be uniformed with White Polo T/Shirts from his Company under the Wellman’s brand.
Among the awards to be shared out would be Best Batsman, Best Bowler, Most Promising Player and Man of the Finals. Teams interested in being a part of the Mike’s Pharmacy Under-15 Tournament can contact Foster on 337-4562 or Secretary Robby Saywack on 660-0049 or 232-0255.
