Reigning champion Melanie ‘B’ outlasted a spirited performance from Buxton, before escaping with a 2-0 penalty shootout win as the East Coast Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition opened in front of a capacity crowd on Wednesday evening at the Haslington Tarmac on the East Coast of Demerara.
The two combatants failed to trouble the score sheet in an exciting regulation time duel, before the title holders netted twice in the penalty shootout to advance to the round robin stage. However, there was no luck for inaugural champions Plaisance A, who were booted from the tournament following a crushing 3-0 loss to an impressive Belfield Warriors unit.
Another former champion that suffered a similar fate was Melanie A, whose defeat came at the hands of the youthful Uprising team that won 2-0 courtesy of the Guinness Goal (GG) which accounts for two goals scored in the final three minutes of play.
Buxton Diamond looked impressive in their 3-0 demolition of Mahaica Guinness Bar, while another previous champion BV ‘A’ was pushed to the brink by Police ‘B’, before securing a narrow 1-0 win.
Victoria Church Yard moved on after beating BV ‘B’ 3-2 in sudden death penalty kicks after regulation time finished goalless. Samuel Van Dyke’s 16th minute strike created heartbreak for the home fans as Mahaica Determinators squeezed past Haslington Hypers 1-0 to progress to tomorrow’s round-robin phase.
