A traditional Good Friday is one that is spent quietly at home with family, but in recent times, many have broken with that ritual so a large turnout is anticipated tomorrow when the Pull-a-Rama or what is known as the King Domino Competition.
The occasion is the Hairoun Beer-sponsored Annual Faye Joseph International Tournament which will take place, at 1223 Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt.
According to the Organising Committee, a small fee of $2,000 will be charged to enter and registration has already begun.
The release added that with teams expected from Barbados, USA, Canada and Colombia among others, the fight for individual glory could provide the spark for what should be an exciting tournament with team Competition set to begin the following day, at the same venue.
The sport which has evolved from being a leisure activity not so long ago to one that attracts numerous teams and hundreds of participants is expected to be the buzz on the sports calendar this weekend as the biggest event in the sport so far for the year gets cracking with over $1million in prize monies and trophies up for grabs along with bragging rights.
The hype has intensified over the past few days and teams have been registering at a fast clip with those from the corporate community including the Private and Public Sectors along with individual teams anticipated to make up the bulk of the participants.
The Organising Committee has already indicated that all systems are in place for a riveting tournament which they are confident will be run in a highly disciplined manner.
It was further disclosed that teams from regions outside of Georgetown and overseas have been making inquiries about the tournament and coupled with the large influx of overseas-based Guyanese and other visitors, this year’s competition could easily eclipse previous records of entries.
Faye Joseph, who is the current President of the Guyana National Domino Federation (GNDF) and the Georgetown Domino Association (GDA) and whose brainchild it was to organise the tournament some five years ago, said she is optimistic that this year’s edition will be a huge success and the sport would once again demonstrate its relevance for unmitigated support.
“As someone who has been around the sport for some time, having seen it move from a recreational activity to a more organised and structured sport I am confident that the tournament will be a success and Top Brandz Distributors under its Hairoun Beer brand will be proud of us and more than willing to continue its relationship with tye domino fraternity,” she had stated in earlier remarks.
The winning team will receive $500,000 plus trophy and medals, while second and third place finishers will take away $300,000 and $200,000 respectively along with trophies and medals.
The Most Valuable Player in the final will win $10,000 and a trophy.
The registration fee for teams is $20,000 and each team will be entitled to a free case of Hairoun Beer upon completion of registration.
The competition runs from March 30-April 7 and interested teams or individuals can contact Mark ‘Jumbie’ Wiltshire on tele#665-5855, Barbara Marshall on 683-8280, Faye Joseph on 685-1009 or Rodwell Phillips on 686-0632 for more information.
