Being used as a preparation event for Guyana’s national table tennis team selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games scheduled for Gold Coast Australia from April 4th-16th, several Guyanese players enjoyed a good showing in their preparation when they participated in the March edition of the 2018 Westchester Table Tennis Championships held over the weekend of March 24th-25th.
The Westchester Table Tennis Championships is a United States of American Table Tennis Association USATT-rated 4-star tournament, with $5,000+ in prizes; the tournament draws players from across North America and around the world. The tournament is recognized as one of the largest monthly table tennis tournaments held in the U.S.
Shemar Britton was in excellent from when he captured the Open 2350 category when he defeated Stephen Chui in the finals of the event held at the Westchester TTC.
Nigel Bryan who also participated in the under 2350 category secured a bronze medal after he lost out to eventual finalist StephenChui.
Britton, coached by Sydney Christophe and supported by his Guyanese teammates, won his matches in group stage advancing to the quarterfinals where he defeated Alex Alardin, while in the semifinals he defeated D. Vrasath before taking revenge for his teammate Bryan who had lost to Stephan Chui in the semifinals. Britton followed his win in the 2350 category with a quarterfinal finish in the 2500 Open category.

Other success for the Guyanese was women’s senior Natalie Cummings who finished in the semifinals of the 20-50 category having lost in a close encounter to eventual tournament winner in a match that she should have won after leading. 2017 Caribbean Girls singles bronze medalist Priscilla Greaves lost in the 1900 division in the group stages.
National men’s Table Tennis champion Christopher Franklin seeking to capture his form, reached the round of 16 in the vaunted 2500 Open category.
Joel Alleyne lost in the semifinals of the 2250 category, while Priscilla Greaves lost in the 1900 category.
The team is supported by 11 times national men’s champion and 1992 Caribbean men’s champion, Mr. Sydney Christophe Caribbean who will conduct an intense 4 day training camp with the players before they depart for Australia on the 30th March. He is being supported by women’s veteran champion, Guyanese Mrs. Diane Chance and Guyanese Shawn Abrams.
Christophe, a ITTF level three certified coach and course coordinator, said it was a good outing, showing and great preparation for the players for which he will engage them for tactical and mental work in the preparation camp schedule yesterday to Friday at the Chinese Community Center Flushing NY 43-17 Union St Flushing NY.
