Shortly after withdrawing her last savings from a commercial bank yesterday, a 67-year-old woman found herself standing at Parika, East Bank Demerara, with a gun pressed to her stomach, as a bandit relieved her of $90,000 and personal documents.
The brazen attack occurred at around 10:00 hrs, mere seconds after the Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara pensioner had exited a bus.
Police said that the robber and an accomplice escaped on a CG motorcycle, with registration number CH 1423. The bike was later found abandoned.
Police have since arrested a suspected ‘trunker’ who they believe trailed the victim in a burgundy-coloured car.
According to a release, the suspect has a pending case for armed robbery before the courts.
The pensioner told Kaieteur News that prior to going to the bank, she had visited the clinic at the Leonora Cottage Hospital. She then visited the National Insurance Scheme, which is also located at Leonora.
From there, she travelled by bus to Vreed-en-Hoop, where she withdrew the last of her savings from a branch of the Republic Bank. She then boarded a bus that took her to Parika, where she had planned to purchase materials for a house that she is building.
“As soon as I come out the bus, a man put a gun to my stomach and say, ‘hand me the bag.’” Instead, the woman said she screamed and held on to her handbag. However, the strap snapped, and when the bag fell to the ground, the robber picked it up and fled.
The pensioner recalled that some customers in a nearby shop threw bottles at the fleeing man, who managed to escape on a motorcycle with an accomplice.
In recent months, several persons have been victims of similar robberies after leaving commercial banks. Most of those targeted were Republic Bank customers.
