For her excellent work so far in just one year in the mayor’s chair, long-serving PNCR member and Councillor Winifred Haywood was recently unanimously reelected to the prestigious position as Mayor for Guyana’s oldest town, New Amsterdam. The town also has a new Deputy Mayor.
Haywood, who was the only Councillor returning to the council since the 1994 elections, served in the position of Deputy Mayor on two occasions – once in the previous council – and was the Deputy Mayor before she was elected to sit in the Mayor’s chair last year.
Since her ascension to the top position the town has seen a transformation with numerous developmental projects on the way. With her vast experience and work
attitude, residents are reportedly happy that she has been reelected to the prestigious position to continue the development of the town.
Mayor Haywood, a retired Headteacher and former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, is a practicing preacher at the Mission Chapel Congregational Church in New Amsterdam.
Taking over as new Deputy Mayor is Retired Police Training Instructor, Community Activist and Sports Administrator Compton Grant.
Touted as a people’s person, Grant has a wealth of experience in the field of community development and working with others. The former Sergeant of the Guyana Police Force, retired as a training Instructor with distinction. He was a member of the Berbice Cricket Board where he also served with distinction before rising to the position of third Vice President.
Grant was also a founder of the Kildonan Sports and Cricket Club and the now popular Tucber Park Cricket Club. He lived a number of years overseas in England and Canada before returning to continue his community and political work.
Following the election, both the mayor and deputy mayor promised to work harder for the enhancement of New Amsterdam, while at the same time, providing improved services for the citizens within the township.
Haywood in her thank you speech expressed gratitude to her colleagues for the confidence shown in her. She thanked them for their support shown during the past months. Haywood said that she knows that the job would be challenging, but with the help of her colleagues she has the confidence that they will be successful in addressing a number of issues affecting the town.
Deputy Mayor Grant was also grateful to his colleagues for electing him to serve in the post. He promised to give it his best shot and to give the Mayor his full support in getting the work done.
Both Mayor Haywood and Deputy Mayor Grant are pleading with residents to abide by the by-laws and regulations of the Mayor and Town Council.
A massive clean-up project is presently on going in the town with the Burnham Park, Mental Hospital Compound and Playfield and The Esplanade Park areas being attended to at the moment.
