With just under four days left for the start of the Hairoun Beer-sponsored Fay Joseph International Domino Competition, the anticipated excitement has begun to saturate the fraternity and the registration of teams has started.
This is according to members of the Organising Committee who’re charged with the responsibility of ensuring that all systems are in place to stage what is considered to be the biggest event on the sport’s calendar to date.
Already, teams from regions outside of Georgetown and overseas have signaled their intentions to be part of the competition and the Organisers are expecting a large turnout to usher in the calendar of activities planned for this year.
Speaking with Faye Joseph, who apart from wearing two hats, being President of both the Guyana National Domino Federation (GNDF) and the Georgetown Domino Association (GDA), whose brainchild it was to organise the tournament some five years ago, she disclosed teams have begun to enquire about the tournament, while some have already confirmed their participation.
“As someone who has been around the sport for some time, having seen it move from a recreational activity to a more organised and structured sport I am confident that the tournament will be a success and Top Brandz Distributors under its Hairoun Beer brand will be proud of us and more than willing to continue its relationship with the domino fraternity,” she stated.
No one could dispute the fact that under her stewardship the sport has become more organised, recognised and certainly more lucrative and teams have responded in kind travelling from outlying regions just to participate in competitions.
Over $1million in prize monies and trophies will be up for grabs and the tournament commences this Friday, March 30 with the Pull-a-Rama, at the President’s Residence at 1223 Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt.
An appeal is being made to all interested teams including those from the corporate community, Private and Public Sectors, individual teams to participate in the competition.
The winning team will receive $500,000 plus trophy and medals, while second and third place finishers will take away $300,000 and $200,000 respectively along with trophies and medals.
The Most Valuable Player in the final will win $10,000 and a trophy.
It was also revealed that a small fee of $2,000 will be charged for the Pull-A-Rama or Individual Competition and registration has already begun.
The registration fee for teams is $20,000 and each team will be entitled to a free case of Hairoun Beer upon completion of registration.
The competition runs from March 30-April 7 and interested teams or individuals can contact Mark ‘Jumbie’ Wiltshire on tele#665-5855, Barbara Marshall on 683-8280, Faye Joseph on 685-1009 or Rodwell Phillips on 686-0632 for more information.
