Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus yesterday remanded a 40-year-old carpenter to prison after he was allegedly caught with almost 15 pounds of marijuana concealed in three buckets.
Keno Argyle, of 25 Main Street, Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, denied the charge which alleged that on March 23, last, at 70 kilometre Barama Road, Essequibo, he had in his possession 6.643kg of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to bail being granted to the father of three, citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, Argyle was a passenger in a minibus heading to Aranka District, Cuyuni-Mazaruni River. He was asked to exit the minibus and to identify his belongings.
The court heard that Argyle pointed to three red five-gallon buckets, and upon examining the buckets, police ranks unearthed a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be narcotics.
When questioned by the police, Argyle told them “Is Tall Man gave me the buckets to carry to Aranka.”
The prosecutor also told the court that Argyle has a matter of a similar nature ongoing in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
Bail was refused and Argyle was instructed to make his next court appearance on April 29 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
