The Berbice Cricket Board on Saturday last for the first time in its history provided financial stipends to its junior cricketers who have been selected to represent the country. Receiving benefits were the Under-15 Male and Female Under-19 players. It was also announced that players at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels would also benefit later on in the year. Newly elected President of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster stated that it was not business as usual for BCB as under his administration, every hero would be recognised and honoured. The Berbice Cricket Board under the stewardship of Foster and Vice President Jevaughn Stephen was able to obtain sponsorship from JR Engineering Ltd and Memorex Enterprise to assist the junior cricketers and National Under-15 Coach Winston Smith.
The six National Under-15 players received $21,000 (US$100) while the five Female players received $10,500 (US$50). Memorex Enterprise sponsored the presentation to the Under-15 players, while JR Engineering supported the female players and National Coach.
The players benefitting were Jeremy Sandia, Mahendra Gopilall, Jonathan Rampersaud, Zeynul Ramsammy, Isaiah Thorne, Shabika Gajnabi, Shaneeta Grimmond, Uma Matadin, Rushanna Lynch and Lafona Gilegous.
Speaking at the simple presentation ceremony which was held at the Albion Community Center, Foster hailed the presentation as another red letter day in the history of Berbice Cricket. He said that the BCB was determined to invest in its players’ development. He urged the players to be role model ambassadors for the ancient county and most importantly to always be disciplined and focused. The workaholic President also pledged that the BCB would work hard every day for the rest of 2018 to make sure that Berbice Cricket returned to its rightful place at the top of the West Indies ladder.
The BCB has a very competent list of leaders who are determined to lead by example and Foster assured the young cricketers that their careers would be their main focus. Foster praised the work of Vice President Jevaughn Stephen who serves as Marketing Manager. He said that Stephen, is hardworking, dedicated and mission driven. The BCB also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Tony Amerally of Memorex Enterprise and Mr. Kean Reid of JR Engineering for their sponsorship of the programme.
Congrats were also expressed to Zeynul Ramsammy and Jonathan Rampersaud on being named Captain and Vice Captain of the Under-15 Guyana Team, while similar message of congrats were also extended to Shabika Gajnabi on being named Captain of the National Under-19 Female Team.
The Berbice Cricket Board also used the ceremony to unveil its Tribute to Heroes individual banners that honoured the seventeen Berbicians who played for the West Indies at the Test level. ODI Players and Female West Indies players were also honoured with their individual banners. The history of Berbice Cricket along with Berbice Cricket Records was also featured.
The Players and their parents expressed gratitude to the BCB for its support. The players hailed the support as a step in the right direction as it would motivate them to make Berbice proud.
