The Guyana Police Force has recorded a 39 percent decrease in murders and an overall 18 decrease in serious crimes at the end of February, 2018. This is in comparison with the same period last year which was at 34 percent.
Recent crime statistics released by the Force showed a two percent increase in robbery under arms where firearms were used; a 41 percent decrease in robbery under arms where instruments other than firearms were used; a 31 percent drop in robberies where no instruments were used; a 36 percent increase in robbery with violence; a 40 percent decrease in robbery with aggravation; a 33 percent decrease in larceny from the person; a 25 percent drop in rape; a 21 percent decrease in burglary and a 19% decrease in break and enter and larceny.
The statistics show that there were 11 murders thus far. Of the homicides, six were of disorderly type, one domestic, and two which occurred during the course of robberies. There were no execution style killings for this year. Police are yet to find the motive for two of these killings.
On the other hand, police seized 24 unlicensed firearms this year compared to 22 for the same period last year. The illegal guns include 15 pistols, four revolvers, four shotguns and one sun-Martine gun. A total of 15 seizures were made in ‘A’Divison; four in ‘B’ Division; one in ‘C’ Division; ‘F’ and ‘E’ Divisons had a total of two seizures. No seizures were made in ‘D’ and ‘E’ Divisions.
In respect to traffic management, they were an 18.1% decrease in fatal accidents recorded at the end of February 2018. There was a tie in respect of serious accidents and a decrease in both minor and damage accidents.
Speeding, inattentiveness and pedestrian crossing in the path of approaching vehicles were the main causes of fatal accidents. Statistics also showed that there were 2’935 recorded cases of speeding, 752 instances of breach of condition of road service license, 247 cases of persons driving under the influence of alcohol, 165 cases of persons using their cellular phones while driving, it was also reported that 254 drivers breached the traffic light signals.
It was also reported that there were 535 cases of tinted motor vehicles, 261 cases of unlicensed drivers, 1171 drivers failed to wear seat belts, 133 cases of dangerous driving, 155 cases of careless driving. They were also 159 cases where drivers failed to wear safety helmets and 618 recorded instances of overloaded minibuses.
The police force has also reported that they were 390 cases of vehicular obstruction, 809 cases of drivers failing to confirm to sign. There were 514 cases of drivers crossing the double yellow line. A total of 14,777 cases for traffic offences were recorded from January 1 to the end of February.
