Against the backdrop of the repeated school shootings in the USA, I have composed this poem. I appreciate if you can publish.
VOICES OF OUR CHILDREN
Never the thought they envisaged
That it would come to this,
Leaving books and backpacks behind
To muster the nerve and strength
Rallying with classmates and friends,
A pause in their daily learning
For a greater cause unfolding,
No more blood to be spilled
Not another child to be killed,
In the place they reckoned to be safe
The classroom and the schoolyard,
With memories of laughter and play
Now tinged with horror and fear.
The voices of our children
Railing against the halls of power
Where crooked politicians gather,
Seeking another term in office
To placate those in high places,
Nothing in their legislative agenda
To stall the repeated slaughter,
Leaving mothers to mourn
Hearts broken and torn,
By a brutality so senseless
Against the innocent and defenseless.
The voices of our children
Shaming those who profit from more guns,
Their hands stained with the blood
Of hearts that throbbed with life and beauty
With so much grace and gaiety,
Those pretty faces
The joy of their fathers’ embraces.
The voices of our children
Demanding our attention,
No more sanctimonious condolences
No more empty promises,
It’s the call for action
The cry of reason and conscience.
The voices of our children
Not to be ignored or slighted
They will not be ruffled or muted,
For they are the breath and soul
O what morality remains
In this wretched world,
And their gathered strength
Will ignite the flames
Of dissent and change
