“I’m proud that in seven weeks time, we will be able to deliver on a promise and the nation will realize a long overdue dream,” head of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Wayne Forde explained yesterday during a site visit at the National Training Center at Providence.
Johannes Van Krimpen, a representative of the Holland based contracting company Greenfields who is responsible for preparing the pitch, noted that the most difficult part of the project, the site’s land filling and irrigation works which was sub-contracted to Nabi Construction Inc., was completed. The subsequent works will include leveling of the current loam surface and laying of the artificial pitch, all of which is projected to less than two months.
Wayne Dover, Interim head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Golden Jaguars, posited on behalf of coaches locally that upon the project’s completion, it will augur for the implementation of certain aspects of training that were hindered by the available facilities in the nation currently such as possession based training.
Football stakeholder, Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith, who has served the game well for decades locally both on and off the field, related jubilation at being alive to witness Guyana being fashioned with a professional pitch. “I’ve been a player, referee and in administration and to see this project a reality, I can’t wait to see it completed,” ‘Sparrow’ explained.
Both Forde and Van Krimpen noted that the challenge of completing the project on time has been the inclement and unpredictable weather pattern of Guyana and its only such that could see the projected completion time of seven weeks being extended.
