Bounty Colts and Plasiance Guardians were flawless in dismantling their opponents as they swept to championship glory in the Under-23 and First Division best of three finals of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) knockout tourney at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Wednesday night.
Colts followed up their 68-59 whipping of the Republic Bank Nets in game one of the first division finals on Monday with a walloping 86-62 thumping on Wednesday night to warp-up what was intended to be a three-game battle.
Skipper Shelroy Thomas poured in the game high 20 points while Stanton Rose (15 points) and Sheldon Thomas 12 were vital contributions for Colts’ blowout win against a tired looking Nets whose Hodayah Stewart contributed 15 points in a losing bid.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport after the win, Colts Skipper Thomas said that despite winning the first division competition, “We didn’t play to our fullest potential in this tournament but we are taking this victory as a stepping stone to next month’s Road to Mecca (National Club Championships).” Colts are national two-time defending champions.
In the Under-23 finals, Guardians also made a faultless move in ensuring that there would not be at third match as they pounded Pacesetters 65-51picking up where they had left off in game one which they had won handsomely, 73-59.
For the champs, Terrence Daniels was again in vintage form with another strong performance and was well supported by his Captain and center, Akeem Crandon as the two worked in tandem during eth demolition of Pacesetters.
While the eventual 14-point game was still close, late in the third and early in the fourth quarter, Guardians’ Nigel Bowen stepped up and netted valuable field goals that took the match away from Pacesetters in decisive moments. Unfortunately, administrative blunders at the table resulted in the scorers not being able to keep track of the individual scores.
Key to note is that the entire Guardians U-23 team is also their second division unit that had defeated Colts on Tuesday night, hence the group of players would’ve competing for three consecutive nights and despite this, Pacesetters couldn’t slow them down.
Terrence Daniels who would’ve only been challenged for the division’s MVP title by his Captain Akeem Crandon, expressed delight in winning the title after many years: “This win means a lot to us because it’s been at least seven years since we’ve actually won a championship and it has always been a struggle coming up, getting knocked out at the semifinals or losing the finals, so I’m very happy that we can have this moment.”
