In the company of members of the Organising Committee, Faye Joseph receives the sponsorship cheque from Top Brandz Marketing Manager, Marvin Wray.
Top Brandz Distributors under its Hairoun Beer confirmed its commitment to the Faye Joseph International Domino Competition during a formal ceremony yesterday at the Company’s Head Office, Broad Street.
Highlighting the entity’s binder was Marketing Manager Marvin Wray, who pledged an undisclosed sum to the Organisers at the launch. In his remarks, Wray spoke of the meteoric rise in popularity of the sport which according to him just a few years ago was considered a pastime activity, but has grown to take on international and regional dimensions.
He added that from his expeditions across Georgetown and beyond, he has witnessed a large following and love for the sport and in addition to the support the participants give to various brands; he had no hesitation in offering his brand to the event.
”I usually traverse Georgetown on a daily basis and what I saw was really encouraging and perhaps that view provided the impact that I needed to confirm our commitment. What I saw was that the sport enjoys a large following, while the support for whatever brand that decides to add its name to the competition is generally tremendous.”
He reminded the gathering that included the hierarchy of the Georgetown Domino Association (GDA) of the Company’s philosophy which is primarily centered on the support and uplift of communities through sports and responsible social activities.
President of the GDA and the Guyana National Domino Federation (GNDF) Faye Joseph, whose brainchild it was to organize the annual tournament some five years ago in her presentation first thanked the Company for its generosity, adding that while the relationship has been born today (yesterday) she envisages it to be long lasting and promised to do everything possible to ensure that the union stays strong.
”I’ve said on many occasions to my executive that whatever I put my hands on just like Midas it will turn to gold and Domino is one such example of benefitting from my touch,” Joseph boasted.
Under her tenure the game has become more organised, recognised and undoubtedly more lucrative with teams travelling from many regions just to participate in competitions. Also sharing the occasion were Secretary- Barbara Marshall, Tournament Coordinator-Rodwell Phillips, GDA Treasurer-Earl Mars and Senior Organiser-Mark ‘Jumbie’ Wiltshire.
Over $1million in prize monies and trophies will be up for grabs and the tournament is expected to commence on Friday, March 30, at the President’s Residence, 1223 Gaulding Place, South Ruimvedt.
An appeal was made for all interested teams including those from the corporate community, Private and Public Sectors as well as individual teams to participate in the competition.
The top prize is $500,000 plus trophy and medals, while second and third place finishers will take away $300,000 and $200,000 respectively along with trophies and medals.
The Most Valuable Player in the final will win $10,000 and a trophy. It was also revealed that a small fee of $2,000 will be charged for the Pull-A-Rama or Individual Competition and registration has already begun.
The registration fee for teams is $20,000 and each team will be entitled to a free case of Hairoun Beer upon completion of registration. The competition runs from March 30-April 7 and interested teams or individuals can contact Wiltshire on 665-5855.
