I noticed for a very long time that some Guyanese politicians usually revisit the racial disturbances of 1964 to sway Guyanese voters; I wish to inform the younger generation that was not born at that time, or was too young to remember what transpired in that era, the PPP and the PNC were equally responsible for that mayhem. I witnessed firsthand, the brutality that occurred.
To the younger Guyanese, I appeal to you, do not believe the lies some politicians and even close relatives are spewing for the sole purpose of obtaining your votes.
During the racial violence of that period, both Indians and Blacks rescued and sheltered each other from being killed or brutalised. Some of the politicians encouraged people to carry out such evil deeds.
In the area where I grew up, I had a friend whose name was Dasrat. The people in our community ensured noting happened to him. When the conflict was over, his relatives were able to travel to the area and take him into their care. There were instances where Indians did the same for Blacks.
Those situations are what Guyanese politicians should exploit to bring harmony among the Guyanese people; not the negatives of the racial conflict to obtain votes. This brings me to a question for President Granger.
Will President Granger use his Social Cohesion Ministry to emphasise “togetherness” among Guyanese, instead of belabouring the Ills of the PPP in order to gain votes?
It is time politicians send out their “disciples” to convince Guyanese that they have a genuine interest in ensuring there is harmony among Guyanese.
