A minibus driver who allegedly struck and killed a pensioner while she was attempting to cross the road to make her way to church was yesterday charged and released on $300,000 bail.
Narsingh Jagsar appeared in the Vigilance Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Peter Hugh and denied the charge which alleged that on March 4 at Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara, he drove minibus BKK 6714 in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of 87-year-old Lydia Rodrigues.
Attorney-at-law Bernard DaSilva asked that his client be released on reasonable bail, citing that he is not a flight risk. The lawyer added that his client will return to court for the trial. The Magistrate granted the defendant $300,000 bail and instructed him to make his next court appearance on April 5 for commencement of the trial.
According to reports, on the day in question Lydia Rodrigues of Lot 51 North Melanie, East Coast Demerara, was struck by the minibus while heading to church.
It was reported that the minibus was proceeding west along the southern driving lane of the road while Rodrigues was standing on the northern side of the road.
As the minibus approached, Rodrigues tried to cross the road and was struck by the vehicle. Rodrigues sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital.
A breathalyzer test conducted on Jagsar showed no trace of alcohol in his system.
