An ex- member of the Guyana Police Force, Deon Aaron, accused of raping a three year-old girl, was yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court. The committal followed the conclusion of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) conducted before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Yesterday, Magistrate Latchman ruled that there was sufficient evidence against Aaron for him to stand trial before a judge and jury at the Supreme Court. Deon Aaron of Craig, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on March 14, 2016, at Friendship Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of sixteen.
The matter was held in camera.
According to information, the child was left in Aaron’s care by her mother. When she returned home, the child complained that she was not feeling well.
The mother upon checking the three-year-old observed that she may have been sexually assaulted.
The matter was then reported, and an investigation was carried out. The accused was arrested and charged for the offence.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield strongly objected to bail being granted to the accused, citing the serious nature of the offence, the penalty that the charge attracts and the fact that a young child was involved.
Magistrate Latchman granted Aaron, $200,000 bail pending his High Court trial.
