A fine half century (53) by Ravi Beharry guided Aurora Knightriders to a comfortable 21 runs victory over Invader Masters in the second round of the South Essequibo Cricket Committee Invitational T/20 knockout cricket competition played last Sunday at the Imam Bacchus Cricket Ground.
Sent in to bat on a track tailor made for fast bowlers, the Knightriders suffered an early set back when first round centurion Anand Manniram was dismissed by R. Bishop for 2 with the score on 7. It soon became 12-2 when Garfield Phillips (3) became Bishop’s second scalp. However, Beharry and opener Deoraj Dindyal then staged ‘operation rebuild’ with a solid 65 runs partnership. This union was soon broken when Dindyal played across the line and was LBW to D. Lakhan for 37 (5×4). Timor Gafoor then joined Beharry and carried the score to 97 before Lakhan trapped Gafoor LBW for an aggressive 20 (3×4).
Masters’ skipper Linden Daniels then pegged the run rate back with a cluster of wickets. The Knightriders were eventually bowled out for 158 off the final ball of the innings. Daniels claimed 5-26, Lakhan 2-21 and Bishop 2-22.
Invader Masters got off to a horrible start when off spinner Dindyal trapped T. Chan LBW for a duck. Beesham Seepersaud was then bowled by Manniram for 5 to leave them reeling at 13-2. However, Daniels 39(2×4) and Bishop 22 (1×4)(1×6) then put together a fighting 38 runs partnership. When both were dismissed within the space of 10 runs, only Roy Gonsalves with a cameo 18 (2×6) got into double figures as Masters were all out for 137 in 19.4 overs. Bowling for the Knightriders, Manniram grabbed 2-12, left arm spinner Phillips 2-14, while a wicket apiece went to Dindyal, A. Buskh, I. Ally and R. Ally.
Aurora Knightriders will play Imam Bacchus at the Imam Bacchus Cricket Ground in semi-final one, while Jaguars face Cottonfield at the Cottonfield Cricket Ground in the other semi-final this Sunday. Action for both matches starts at 10:00 am. Admission to the venues is absolutely free.
