Mar 21, 2018 Letters
Dear editor,
I am writing this letter because my heart goes out to the parents and children of the Hope Secondary School that has the potential to perform way above its current state of performance according to parents. However, its growth and possibilities cannot be realized due to the lack of dedicated teachers and a non-functioning educational standard operating procedure at the school.
Parents who have asked for their names not to be mentioned have requested of me to write this letter stating that they have children who attend the school in Forms Two, Three and Five. These childen have been complaining constantly to the school’s authority (HM) and at parent-teacher meetings about the laissez faire attitude of most of the teachers, as it relates to educating the children with the right tools necessary for their learning and passing of exams at the CSEC level. Nothing has improved.
One parent complained that her child has more assignments in his books than notes and the few notes that he has there was no explanation given to him for them. Upon noticing this, she said she went to the Head Mistress only to be told that she has had several other complaints of the same sort from other parents, and has spoken to the teachers who have not put their house in order since being spoken to.
Editor, I have evidence that these teachers have been doing far less than what they are paid to do. The school’s name is stained with fights on a daily basis, some more violent than others because of the idleness of the students due to absence of work and lack of supervision by the teachers.
Parents have reported that many of the children that go to the school are below their age range in knowledge of the school work. Parents who can afford are spending up to $20,000 a month to ensure that their children can have extra lessons since at the end of the day, they have voiced that their child is their ultimate priority.
But they have opined that if the teachers can do what they are paid to, they would not have to then pay such enormous fees for extra lessons.
Teachers from other schools have also been among the very many who have visited this school to beg the Head teacher to do something about the fact that their child and other children are not given the basic work necessary to do them educational justice. A comparison of the children’s books from Forms One to Five will show that the minimum amount of curriculum work is not even been covered per week or term.
One of the many distasteful incidents that is worth mentioning is that dog dung as of lately was in the school for days and no cleaner has been kind enough to remove it in a timely manner. Children got sick and could not even eat their food.
This school is in need of help, the teachers are wasting children’s time, the parent’s money and they “wave their flag like they just don’t care”.
Frustrated
