A livestock farmer is fearful for his life after he was reportedly kidnapped, beaten and robbed by known characters on the Corentyne. Two of his attackers were recently released on bail for a shooting incident at Hampshire, Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The kidnapping and beating incident took place on Saturday at approximately 10:00 am.
According to the man, the gang of men arrived at his home in a rented vehicle named “Prophecy” and two other private vehicles and accused him of purchasing sheep that belonged to them from someone who stole it.
The victim said he told the men that he knows nothing about the sheep they are inquiring about but this did not deter them. The alleged attackers exited the vehicle, he said, and forcefully shoved him into one of the cars.
“Me went and buy egg fuh me old lady and when me come back home, me see three carload come. Dem man scramble meh and throw meh in ah car. Dem carry meh till ah back at Port Mourant and dem start beat meh and choke meh till meh mouth and nose start bleed,” the man disclosed.
It did not end there. The attackers reportedly drove to another village and continued the beating, this time using chains, steel bars and a piece of wood.
According to him, the men claimed that they lost 30 sheep and they were accusing him of buying two of the alleged stolen sheep, something he claimed, he is unaware of. After the beating, the men drove the victim back home and made demands. They allegedly asked that he pay $80,000 and hand over 5 heads of goat or he would be killed, the victim said. He agreed and allowed the men to take the goat and the money.
A report was subsequently made the said day of the incident at the Whim Police Station. The victim had visible injuries about his face and some parts of the body.
Meanwhile, another victim who suffered a similar fate said the same attackers are terrorising others along the Corentyne, who are in the livestock business. He stated that the alleged attackers are claiming, that “they bypass Whim Police Station, Albion Police Station and the Rose Hall Outpost”.
The victim, who wants his identity concealed, said that they are afraid to report matters as such to the police out of fear that the men would hunt them down and “kill we”.
According to him, “Dem man got gun; dem man got links in the police force and in prison. Dem man does sit down in jail and witness does dead pon the road. Dem man come out of jail and people dead in jail.”
The men are appealing to the authorities to handle the matter seriously and with a sense of urgency.
Meanwhile, Divisional Commander Lyndon Alves was informed by Kaieteur News of the incident and he has since promised to look into the matter himself.
